Q. How to deal with a public defender?

I am going to ask judge to get a public defender since I don't have money to hire professinal attorny. What documents or statements I need to prepare when I go to the court to ask for a public defender. How long it takes to get a public defender usually? I can ask Korean translater at the same time or later?
I appreicate you guys help all the time.
