The answer depends on lots of factors. If your child is over 18 and it happened in California, it is a crime and he/she can face criminal conviction. Probably no jail time, but community labor and a criminal record. It is possible to reduce the case to an infraction or dismissal after short probation time.
If your child is under 18, you will have to go also to court as the parent. In that case, there is a good chance for the same but minor's records will be sealed so it shouldn't effect his/her life in the future.
