On a positive note, since the apartment was under your friend's name, your credit will not be damaged for breach of rental agreement. You can stay there as long as you want until the landlord sues you for eviction. Since you are not the named tenant on the lease, they will first provide you with a 3 day notice to pay rent or get out. You don't have to get out then. After the third date, the landlord can file a eviction lawsuit, but it will be against your friend's name and all "occupants." You then have five days to file an Answer with the court. If you don't file an answer, they will get a judgment within about 10 days or so and the marshall will come out to your place about 10 days after that. You can then move out. If you file an Answer, you will gain about 20 days additional time.
