Second, the first court appearance is NOT trial, it is arraignment. At the arraignment, all you do is plead guilty or not guilty. Third, the boyfriend CANNOT represent your niece or go to trial and defense her. Her boyfriend may be a witness, but he cannot change the outcome. A domestic violence case that your niece is facing is serious. If she is not a citizen, she could get deported for this crime even if it is a misdemeanor. It is best that she hires an experienced attorney.
