Q. definition of dependents in the Form w-4

I live with my sister and mother. My sister is 24 years old and my mother is 56 years old. I am actually paying all the cost of living because they are currently unemployed. I'd like to know if I can include them in the number of allowances I can claim with the Form w-4.

Hello Mr. Lee. I am Jack Lee, CPA.

The allowance number on Form W-4 decides how much of federal and state income taxes will be withheld from your periodic payroll income. The tax amount withheld and remitted to taxing authorities will be reconciled during your annual income tax return preparation. Depending on the amounts, you could owe or be allowed for a refund.

It appears that your sister and mother can be claimed as "qualified relative" dependents. Therefore you can claim them on your W-4.

Thank you.

You can claim both. Your relatives don't need to be live wiith you as long as they meet the relative requirement and you regularly pay more than half of their living expenses.
