Driving with an expired driver's license is technically a criminal misdemeanor offense. However, in many cases, if you renew your driver's license before the court date and show proof of that to the court, the court will usually reduce your case to an infraction (like a ticket) and have you just pay a fine. Your insurance may however go up a bit.
